Beacon Hospice, Inc Volunteer Training     

Beacon Hospice, Inc is always looking for dedicated, passionate volunteers to provide care and comfort to our patients.  Volunteers enhance quality of our patients and families’ lives and also help us to provide them with extraordinary care.  This free training will be offered over seven weeks.

Chi Kung      Part I

Chi Kung means skilled use of energy.  Learn to circulate energy through the body with simple movement and breathing techniques.  Learn to transform stress into vitality, to relax the body, to quiet the mind and be present.  For information on Part II see Tai Chi description.

Eight Weeks to Wellness  

Somerset Heart Health (SHH) and Redington-Fairview General Hospital are pleased to offer an Adult Education class in MSAD 54 entitled Eight Weeks To Wellness. This is a health enhancement program combining education with practice. It is a great opportunity for people wanting to improve their overall health. The instructional materials cover eight health themes that are known to be key ingredients for lifelong health. Participants will have fun spending eight weeks learning from a variety of instructors and practicing the specific skills needed for living a healthy life.  Call SHH (474-7473)or MSAD 54 Adult Education (474-7553) to register or receive further information.  Lab Fee $10.00 includes workbook and healthy snack.

Tai Chi       Part II

Tai Chi means balance between the extreme, yin/empty/receptive and Yang/full/active.  Learn an old form of TaiJi "Primordial Chi Kung".  Learn to gather Chi (energy) from all four directions in spiraling movement.  Easy to learn and delivers fast and powerful Chi. The Clowning Workshop    

Do you need a stress-relieving hobby?  Are you someone with a good sense of humor?  Then this clowning class is for you.  Express your hidden talents, have fun, and learn a viable trade all at once.  At the end of the class you will receive a clowning certificate.

Yoga

This one hour session integrates breathing and movement to guide the student through a series of yoga postures. The postures will focus on body awareness and stress relief. Students should bring their own yoga mat, water and wear comfortable clothing.

MSAD 59 Madison Area Classes

Active Parenting Now

This series of six classes combines video, activities and discussion to provide parents with the skills to raise responsible, cooperative children able to resist negative peer pressure and meet the challenges of the teen years.  Designed for parents of children ages 5-12, the program also demonstrates non-violent discipline techniques and effective encouragement skills, which will enable them to develop self-esteem in their children.  For more information and to register in advance, please call: Deb Rich at 859-1580.  This program is sponsored by the Somerset County Family Enrichment Council of KVCAP and the Somerset County Community for Children and Youth.

Basics Adult Living Skills and Cooking (NEW)

This class is designed to teach basic cooking skills and kitchen hygiene.  Included will be safety, money management and self care (such as hygiene, buying and taking care of clothing, etc.)

Cooking Healthy on a Tight Budget (NEW)

This class will address: eating healthy on a tight budget, how to avoid unwanted dinner guests, bacteria, implementing the Food Pyramid into your diet, portions vs. servings, how to read food labels and how to preserve foods.

Hatha Yoga, Beginners

Hatha Yoga can help you cope with stress, relieve tension, and deal with anxiety and depression. This course is designed to improve the health, performance, and mental acuity of athletes or individuals interested in improving their level of fitness, blending balance, strength, flexibility and power in a fitness format. The instructor has received YogaFit Teacher Training Level 1 training, which overcomes the mystery of yoga by delivering a practical, user-friendly style, accessible, understandable, and doable by individuals at any level of fitness. All you need is a mat, clothes that allow you to move and the willingness to learn and ask questions.

Your Child and Higher Education: What Parents Can Do To Make It Happen (NEW)

The Maine Parent Federation GEAR UP program offers parents of high school students this opportunity to learn ways to support their children through high school and into the higher education program of their choice: a career apprenticeship, a trade certification, a two or four-year college program.  MPF GEAR UP staff and expert speakers from high school guidance, financial aid, career planning and college admissions resources will cover these topics as well as provide reference and background materials addressing all areas of higher education.  There is no cost to participants for classes or materials.  For more information and to register in advance, please call: Ann Long at 623-2144.
