Maine School Administrative District #54

Annual Tie Dye Project
 Instructor: Frank Chin

We had really nice weather last week (September 10, 2009), Penobscot and Kennebec communities took advantage and created Tie Dye t-shirts.  Students did well in understanding color mixing and 3 methods of tying their shirt.  As you can see here, students are actively engaged in mixing their own unique color combinations.

  1. Bull’s eye is when you take the center of the shirt and lift both layers (front and back), about 2-4” down, tie elastic around the shirt.  Repeat about 4-5 more times, depending on how large the shirt is.
  2. Radom method is when you do the same as the bull’s eye except that you “randomly” select a spot for the dye to penetrate. Repeat process 4-5 times.  Try and stay around the center.  This will make it easier to dye.
  3. Spiral method is when you place your index finger and thumb in the center of shirt. Holding it tight.  From there you will turn your shirt 4-5 revolutions or until you can’t turn anymore.  With fingers still grasping the cloth, take your other hand and group the t-shirt in one tight spiral pattern.  Tie elastic through the center of the spiral. Repeat this step until you have completed.  Use 4-5 folds.
