Maine Winter Landscapes
Inspired by Andy Wyeth

2nd and 3rd graders studied the somber artwork of Andrew Wyeth – a well-known artist who spends much of his life in Maine – before embarking on their own winter landscapes. If you have ever looked closely at his art, you might ask – does it look happy? Not particularly. This has a lot to do with his father’s death – it was the saddest time of his life, as Andy’s dad was like a best friend. He was so deeply affected that his art changed drastically, using very few colors and painting winter and fall scenes.

All About Andy:

He is one of the most famous artists of 1900’s, and his family LOVES art - he is the son of the illustrator and artist N. C. Wyeth, and the brother of inventor Nathaniel Wyeth and artist Henriette Wyeth Hurd, and the father of artist Jamie Wyeth.

He was a sickly child, so he stayed home a lot. He and his father spent a lot of time together, and that’s when N.C. taught him how to draw and paint

Andy is often referred to as the "Painter of the People" due to his popularity with the American public

He is best known for simple, very natural and detailed pictures of rural scenes, wildlife, and the otherwise quiet life of his hometown Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania and his summer home in Cushing, Maine.
