2nd and 3rd graders spent 3 long weeks creating these landscapes
in the style of Van Gogh. They first learned about his life and struggles
as an artist, and then tried to emulate his style of painting motion in the sky
that he is so well-known for. They used crayon, watercolors, oil pastels, and
lots of observation of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” to create
these beautiful works of art.
Did you know…?
- Impressionism is a painting movement in which artists tried to capture change. Can
you imagine trying to paint light as it’s changing, or the wind blowing,
or a river flowing? It’s hard to wrap your head around!
- Van Gogh wasn’t always an artist – he tried his hand at many
things, including a salesman and a priest, and he only began painting at the
end of is life. He made 800 paintings in the last 10 years of his life.
- Van Gogh wasn’t always famous. In fact, while he was painting, he was
incredibly poor and unpopular. He spent all his money on art supplies, forgot
to eat, and forgot to sleep. He is enormously popular today.
