Goals
The history of art goes back 20,000 years to the first charcoal and clay
scratches on the walls of Ice Age caves. Art is created in multitudinous
forms in every culture in the world. All this, needless to say, makes it a
daunting subject.
In Foundations of Art, art history is sometimes integrated with
classroom studio assignments, but is also taught as an independent unit.
Study materials come from more than one source - books, video, prints,
Scholastic Art magazine, the internet and handouts. Each artist, style or
period of art is related to others for similarities and differences, and for
ways we as students can improve our own work through the study of others.
Artwork is studied for its historic context as well as its intrinsic worth.
