Inspired by Penny Hall’s Anchovy
fish series, 7th and 8th grade students at Skowhegan Area Middle School created fish
during art class in the clay unit. They were challenged by art teacher
Kathleen Perelka to make elaborate fish from one central piece of clay that had
all of the details pulled from the core piece of clay rather than attaching separate
pieces of clay. This makes the fish much stronger than the technique of
adding on additional pieces of clay for details such as fins, tail , eyes scales
etc. All of the exploratory 7th graders made at least one fish; 8th grade accelerated
art students made 2-3 fish each.
After drying and then firing
the fish, under glazes were applied in bright colors. Works were clear
coated with glaze and then fired again.
The students then selected the
10 they wanted to represent their class for display at the Blueberry Cupboard. Al
Dixon with son A.J. Dixon, Tammy Perkins with daughter Megan Perkins and art
teacher Kathleen Perelka hung the fish for display on Friday November 9th at
the Blueberry Cupboard. They will remain on display until December 15th.
