Self Portraits by Extra Art students from MCSS and Mill Stream School
Grades 5 and 6
Art Teacher – Kathleen Smith
Students were asked to create a Self Portrait from direct observation. Each student used his/her own mirror. They warmed up by drawing quick blind contour sketches and then used the partial blind contour technique to draw directly on canvas board. Proper proportion and placement of facial features were then introduced, as were light and shadow. We discussed imitational, emotional, and formal expression in their portraits. Most students were intent on creating a realistic interpretation(imitational) of their own face. Choice of color, especially in the background, did add an emotional quality to many portraits.
The results are direct and powerful representations of each student.
