The following are poems that we created in a recent
poetry workshop. Martin Steingesser, a published poet, came
into our class and shared some of his strategies and secrets
for creating wonderful poetry. As you can see, the students
did a fabulous job! Enjoy!! Nothing Greedy Gold Chameleon
I don't want to write, I don't want to read
I don't want to dance, I don't want to listen
or color, play, draw, eat, or talk.
Nothing will get me going.
Something came by me...
NOW I want to do everything!
Yes, I want to read, yes, I want to dance,
Yes, Yes, Yes!
Now I am tired, and I fall asleep.

Rain, Rain, Rain
Rain, Rain, Rain,
a faucet from the sky.
The ground like a sink.
Rocks like little people on the ground,
trees like giants drinking the water.

Trouble Black
Opposite of Lego!
Ogel is his name!
Evil black he has!
He has a vision of gold!
Let's look at Makuta.
He's the troublemaker, the black master!
Enemy of the Toa he is!
Brickster is a sneaky guy in black!
For he blows up buildings!
Who is the worst of the Trouble Black Crew?

Grandparents
Like moms and dads only older,
with wrinkles so much like an orange.
Were they kids once?
I think they were, but I am always wrong, a person who
doesn't know.
"Katy, Katy," I hear my my grandmother say,
the way my mother calls my name.
"Taste this, taste this," she says,
like my favorite food is being made.
Munch, munch, munch, I hear myself eating.
What is it?
It is CC cookies as hard as rocks.
Are they good?
Yes they are, I can't believe it!
They are as good as a field of flowers.
Red, pink, yellow, and purple good smelling flowers.
Grandparents, good as a field of good-smelling flowers.

Softball
I see the white ball going through the air.
Big ball going fast-zoooooom!
I see a girl swing,
she swings again.
I hear the ball go SPACK! against the white and red
ball,
hit so far, noone could catch it.
I hear a "NO WAY!" from the other team.
Watch the other team throw down bats and balls.
I'm very glad.
I taste some Kool-aid, hear myself going gulp, gulp.
"We win," I yelled, "game over!"

Summer Day
Hear the black and yellow bugs suck the sweet nectar
and then return to a paper white cone shape.
See the cats dance in the distant summer shadows.
Hear the crickets chirp in the shade of ancient oaks and
pines
that seem to never end.
Feel the cool, crisp, summer breeze.
See the sun falling like a huge orange-yellow-white leaf
falling, falling,
as I trudge home as it's still falling when I reach
home.
Maybe I can have some more fun tonight!

Colors
Brown, white, blue, and beige
cars outside.
A big , yellow, and black
school bus
and a big, yellow school
with brick sides
The green grass is so beautiful.
Colors, colors, colors. So nice!
by Chelsea
Blue
Blue, blue, b-l-l-u-u-e-e,
nice blue, small blue,
blue, blue, snow, blue.
Feeling blue, are you?
Cool blue, eye blue,
screen blue, bird blue,
fool blue.
All these blues
make no sense to you.
Me either.
So why should I write?
Blue, blue, blue.

G.T. Mustangs
A mustang is like having he fastest car in the world.
Or having 1,000,000,000,000 dollars.
Better than having 5 motorcycles.
A mustaang is better than a Viper,
or a Corvette, or any other fast cars.

Wish I had gold, greedy gold.
Wish I was a golden tiger.
Spring, golden blossoms every day, in spring.
A bright, golden day at Bloomfield.
See a bright, golden tiger in the rainbow.
Feel an open gold door into Paradise for me.
Gold just like God, without the "L."
Wish I had gold, greedy gold.

Easter
Easter is like Christmas, but different.
Most of the colors are pink, yellow, and violet.
An Easter Bunny is cool, but you can't believe it!
He can do a backflip!
So what do you think? Does he sound cool to you?
The Easter Bunny is so sweet to everyone!
He gives you candy!
Everyone should know the Easter Bunny loves you!
Someday, you might see him!

My Color
I have a favorite color.
The name of it is orange.
A fire orange.
The orange part of the sun,
with an orange shirt on.
I feel the bright orange flowers as I watch them grow.
I see the orange on my tee-shirt,
I wonder how many objects in the world are orange.
I would take anything that had wonderful orange on it.
I see a parrot on the rug, inside a tomb of orange.
I have a favorite color and it's name is orange!

Ancient White
Loneliness is like the
Ancient white that never ends!

Stegosaurus
A herbivore dinosaur that eats only plants
low to the ground.
A plated dinosaur with spikes
on its tail for defense.
A slow dinosaur that can't escape fast.
Stegosaurus, a defensive dinosaurtravels in packs.
A stegosaurus!

My Cat
I see my cat pounce on a mouse
like a knife cutting through butter.
I see my cat begging like a dog.
I hear the food going "chomp, chomp, chomp" in my ear.
I hear the "meow," like a dog barks.
The color is gray and black.

Red, orange, yellow, green, blue
Those are some colors the chameleon can do.
Big eyes, he sees every surprise.
Swirly tail. When I see it,
I get dizzy and I wail.
Slowly walking on a tree,
he sticks his tongue out to catch a bee.
As you watch him, you can see,
he is very slow,
Wait a minute, where did he go?

Shepherd's Dog
Tall and loyal, herding cloud-white sheep.
The dog's eyes deep, dark black. His tongue long,
wet and pink, like a slimy worm, fur soft and warm,
black and brown, like ash and dirt mixed together.
Loud barks like invisible thunder.
A shepherd calls him a German Shepherd, tall and loyal.

The Orange
I take a bite
of the first
cut, fresh
orange and the juice
pouring into my mouth-
mmm...and I see my
mom cutting another
orange and
smelling the fresh orange
blowing across my nose
and seeing the bright color orange
and the wrinkled skin getting
peeled off, and when those
store people wash the
oranges and pack them
into bags, it reminds me
of tasting another orange.

Cry Blue
"O.k., mom. Let's go."
"Don't lock the door of the car."
I say, "Oh, wait, I forgot something.
You just go inside and get your keys."
She forgot she had the keys in the car, in the ignition,
and she locked the door.
We were at Wal-mart. I was about 5 1/2.
"I will strap myself in," I said.
My mom said OK, but don't forget you can't unbuckle
yourself."
"Yep, I know."
She left to find her keys.
Her car is blue, very light blue, like someone crying.
