This grant began in May 2004. Representatives
from USM/Muskie Institute weighed and surveyed random high school students with
permission from parents/guardians. In August 2004, when the students returned
to school all soda and unhealthy snacks were removed from the school A La Carte,
vending, and beverage machines. The food and drinks that remain must be low fat
items (<30% total
calories from fat, excluding fat from nuts, seeds and peanut butter) and low
in sugar (<35% by weight of sugar, excluding sugars occurring naturally in
fruit and dairy products).
The grant will monitor the students for one school year. In May 2005 the same
group of students will be weighed and surveyed to see if there are any major
changes in weight and/or eating habits.
The
Changing the Scene Team has been working closely with this grant and the $3,000
that the high school received for participating is being used to purchase needed
cafeteria equipment. |
