What is a Coordinated School Health Program?

A Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) is an effective system designed to connect health with education. This coordinated approach to school health improves students’ health and their capacity to learn through the support of families, communities,andschools working together.
A Coordinated School Health Program can help to:

• Reduce absenteeism and classroom behavior problems
• Improve classroom performance
• Better prepare students to be productive members of their communities

What is the School Health Educators Role?

As adequate leadership is critical to the support of any community-based program, the position of School Coordinator is central to a well-coordinated school health program. With responsibility for overseeing and coordinating school health programs, the position assumes a primary role in advocating for policies, activities and resources required to implement effective school health programs, including overseeing comprehensive school health education curriculum, instruction and assessment. The coordinator provides leadership and guidance to schools and communities in program administration, implementation and evaluation with a focus on CDC Guidelines for physical activity nutrition and tobacco use prevention.
