Tar Wars is a tobacco-free education program
for fourth grade students. The lesson lasts forty minutes and includes a follow-up
poster contest. Jim Fortunato, Redington-Fairview General Hospital Community
Health Educator, and Fawn Haynie worked together on the program. Jim recruited
a variety of hospital employees to volunteer their time to present the program
in the classrooms. The program is presented yearly to all fourteen MSAD #54 fourth
grade classrooms. Each class participated in the poster contest. Teachers awarded
first through third place prizes. All fourteen first place winners were entered
into the national contest.
In 2006 one MSAD 54 student placed 3rd in the state and two
others placed in the top 20. |
