Maine School Administrative District (MSAD) #54, Skowhegan Maine, is the lead applicant in Bridging the Gap: Connecting Students to Health Related Learning Opportunities. MSAD #54 will partner with Regional School Unit (RSU) #19, MSAD #53, MSAD #74, Healthy Sebasticook Valley Coalition (HSVC), and Somerset Public Health to increase elementary, middle, and high school students’ knowledge of important health and wellness concepts.
Bridging the Gap will provide virtual presence communication-based (videoconferencing) services to 22 schools serving a total of 6,470 students. An additional 575 teachers, 12,940 parents, and 33,250 community members will be served over the three-year project period. The project targets rural, high poverty communities in Somerset and Penobscot Counties, Maine. Middle schools (students and teachers) participating in the Maine Department of Education’s Maine Learning Technology Initiative (MLTI) will receive new 1:1 laptops to augment their learning experiences.
Two local Healthy Maine partnerships—HSVC and Somerset Public Health—will serves as hubs, providing targeted health and wellness programming that originates from critical community health and education indicators. Participating schools will serve as hub/end-users, creating a regional collaboration focused on promoting healthy choices and lifestyles to rural stakeholders who lack access to healthcare-related educational options.
