Online Courses

The MSAD #54 Technology Staff Development program is adding LVS Online classes as an alternative/addition to its regular technology course offerings starting this Fall. These courses qualify for recertification purposes and will be counted as 15 contact hours for each course taken. There will be a limit of 3 courses per staff member in any single year.

LVS is a distance-learning web site dedicated to providing students with an affordable and fun way to learn. You can learn to create a web page, design professional looking graphics, or just improve your skills with MS Office. Please visit their website for additional courses and course descriptions.

Your course request must be approved by Jeanne Mukai, Laura Richter or Dorothy Small (whichever Technology Integration Specialist you work with) and the Assistant Superintendent. You must request a completion Certificate when enrolling and pay the $5.00 additional fee.

Enrollment is easy. All you need is internet-access, a web browser and a desire to learn and have fun. The cost per course is $25.00 for New students and $20.00 for Returning students unless otherwise noted in the course description.

Jeanne Mukai, SAHS Technology Integrationist, has this to say about LVS Online:

I first became interested in taking online courses because I was trying to teach myself DreamWeaver, web authoring software. I was frustrated because it was a very comprehensive piece of software, and I needed some direction and organization. I turned to the web because I could not find any courses offered locally. It was an excellent solution to my problem. I have currently taken 5 classes from LVS Online – Introduction to DreamWeaver, DreamWeaver II, HTML (programming for web design), HTML Level II, and FireWorks (a graphic program).

Each class runs for 6 weeks, I have been very impressed with the quality of the instruction. The material is clearly and well organized with many visuals and examples. The week’s lesson was available on Saturday (online). Each lesson was at least 20 printed pages, but more often close to 30 pages. Each lesson included at least one assignment, but usually 2 or 3. The assignments were due by the following Friday. However, work could be handed in (over the web) at any time. The instructor always responded within 24 hours to questions; more often within a couple of hours! Plus the other students in the class could see all questions and often tried to give some help. I could also look at the work that the other students were submitting, and the quality of the work was always amazing to me. People spent a lot of time on the assignments. I frequently spent at least 5 hours on the reading and completing the assignments. I resubmitted most assignments using the suggestions from the instructor to revise and resubmit. This was the expectation for every class. Some classes also had online quizzes. In order to receive a certificate of completion all assignments had to be completed successfully, and all online quizzes had to be completed.
