Social Studies Project

In social studies, students will be researching what recreational activities Skowhegan currently has to offer residence and visitors.  Students will be investigating and video cataloging the various attractions.  Then, students will begin the task of examining the Run of River project, the Main Street Skowhegan project, and the various other community initiatives.  Next, the students will create a DVD utilizing iMovie.  The focus of the movie is to show area residence and travelers what Skowhegan currently has to offer, and what it we hope to offer in the near future.  Many copies of the movie will be made to give away at local events.  Also, the movie may appear on the Town of Skowhegan Webpage, the local television station, and even as a pod cast.  It is hoped by all involved that this DVD becomes an economic tool that will help make Skowhegan a destination.

Jeff Hewett, town planner in Skowhegan, Maine has been active in collaborating and planning with teachers at both the Skowhegan Area Middle School and Skowhegan Area High School. Jeff initially met with all teachers and administrators to outline all of the downtown revitalization projects proposed for Skowhegan. He presented specific information regarding initiatives currently underway that would be possible tie-ins for student involvement. Jeff, as a member of the leadership team, has provided maps, scientific data, and numerous other informational materials for teachers as they plan educational activities that will eventually have a positive impact on the town economically.
