Sojourner was born in Swartekill, New York in 1797 as a slave. Her parents names are James and Elizabeth Baumfree as slaves. There first owner was a wealthy man from Holland. Her parents taught her to always tell the truth. They also told her to always believe in God. She had 13 brothers and sisters they also were born as slaves.
