Coburn Park got its fantastic name
from our former governor, Abner Coburn. Abner Coburn left part
of the “Russell Lot”, a piece of land
down by the great eddy, in his will to build a public park in the town
of Skowhegan, in 1885. In 1905, Abner Coburn’s brother Philander
Coburn died, and left the rest of the “Russell Lot” in his will,
Next
to the land that Abner Coburn left to Skowhegan, to build a free public
park. Between 1885 and today many organizations have contributed to
Coburn Park by adding trees, constructing a man made pond, and building
a bandstand, a gazebo, memorials, and put a fence around it all.
Coburn Park’s bandstand is used for weddings or other special
occasions. Coburn Park is a great part of Skowhegan’s heritage,
and we hope it continues to stay that way!
