Davis Ferry

The Davis Ferry traveled from Mercer to Starks. It crossed the Sandy River. The people would visit friends and family in Starks. Some people went there to get married. Starks was a bigger town than Mercer at that time. The ferry was big enough to carry horses and wagons. The ferry was connected to a cable that stretched across the river and kept it from floating away. The ferry man would use a long pole to help push the ferry across the river. In 1925 the Davis Ferry was carried away by high waters. The people of Mercer decided they didn't need the ferry anymore because they had better roads. They also thought it cost too much to operate. Mr. Fenton was our tour guide. He took us out to the site where it use to be on the Sandy River Road and he showed us a picture of what it would have looked like.
