Grist Mill

On our tour of Mercer we crossed the bridge on Main St. We saw a millstone erected on a cement base with some words on it. It said that Mercer had its own Grist Mill right on Main St. the building is no longer standing. Our tour guide, Mr. Fenton, showed us where it had been.

In class we read a book about Grist Mills before our bus tour. We learned how grain is ground into flour, how the water powers the water wheel, gears, and mill stones. The miller was a very hard worker. He needed to be strong, and smart in math. He had to work well with people. Grist Mills needed cats to catch the mice.

The history book about Mercer states that Mercer's first miller was Jon Lake in 1804. We are a little sad that Mercer does not have a Grist Mill now. We think that water power is cheaper than electricity and the Mercer Bog stream is a great spot. If there was a fire, there would be water to put it out. We wish there still was a Grist Mill in Mercer.
