Hannibal Ingalls was an important man in Mercer during the 1800s. He had several businesses. They were the Mercantile Shop, Shovel Handle Shop, General Store, Potash Factory, and two Starch Factories. Hannibal Ingalls came to Mercer when he was 35 years old. He was born in 1789. in Bridgeton, Maine. He was the son of Isiah and Phebe Ingalls. Hannibal Ingalls owned a lot of property. He became involved in politics and held jobs for the town: Town Clerk, Selectman, Treasurer, Tax Collector, Town Agent, and School Official. When he died he left $500 to the church. The Beeuwkes family lives in Hannibal Ingall's house on Main Street now. Christien, one of the daughters, showed us the house on our Local History Bus Tour of Mercer. She took us down in the dark cellar. It was a litttle bit spooky. We think the house is beautiful where it is right next to the Mercer Bog Stream. Christien also gave us lemonade and cookies.
