Mr. Culley was one of our tour guides on our hike up Hampshire Hill. Hampshire Hill is 1,046 feet above sea level. The summit is actually in New Sharon. The tallest point in Mercer is about 900 feet. Mr. Culley told us that Hampshire Hill was formed many years ago by a huge glacier. We learned that John Palmer was the first resident to live there around 1804. He named Hampshire Hill after his former state, New Hampshire. We found old cellar holes left behind by farms that use to be there. We learned about the Jones' family and their apple orchards. He showed us a picture of what the house looked like and we found an apple tree that would be 100 years old. Today we can eat oranges and tomatoes all year long because we can buy them at the grocery store. Hampshire Hill is kind of like a ghost town because no one lives there now but Mr. Culley said things that helped us imagine what it was like to live in Mercer over a hundred years ago. As one of the owners of Hampshire Hill, Mr. Culley has worked hard to keep this a special place. We think Hampshire Hill is a great place to hike.
