Mount Tom

Mr. Brian Bulmer took us for a hike up Mount Tom in Smithfield. In the 1800's people built houses on Mount Tom because it was too wet and they were afraid of floods. Also there was chance of less frost and it was easy to cut trees down there. Mount Tom is made of rock . Mr. Bulmer told us that the main road use to go right over Mount Tom. Many people lived and had farms on Mount Tom . Some farmers had sheep. We saw some old cellar holes and a rusted old car and truck on Mount Tom but there are no more houses on the top. We saw different kinds of trees. We especially liked the lady slipper but we didn't pick it. Mr. Bulmer told us that there was a spring where you could get water but we didn't go there because it was too steep. We walked on a trail that led us to some cliffs. They were neat because we could see North Pond. When we had to go back down Mount Tom we went down a different trail . All of a sudden we were on a road . We had to walk until we got to the field behind the Smithfield School. It was tiring. We ate popsicles and then played on the playground . We got on the bus and went home.
