Shaw Library

The Shaw Library is located in Mercer Village. Mrs. Shaw was our tour guide here. She has been the librarian since March 1989. We learned that during the Civil War this building was a Hathaway Coat Factory for making the soldiers' army clothing. Leander Shaw left the town a lot of money for a library and that's how it all started. At one time the building was moved because it was falling down the hill almost into the stream. There is a room above the library which is now used to store old items that tell the story of Mercer. It is a museum. Mercer residents at one time held town meetings in this room until it became too small. When the building was moved, the town office was set up in the basement. Before that town business was taken care of in people's homes. Mrs. Shaw let us look at all the books. There is even a computer that people can use to look up information on the internet. She invited us all to check out books on Wednesdays from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM or on Saturdays from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. If you live in Mercer and you have time, try to go to the Shaw Library. It's a great place!
