THE GRANGE

Our 3rd grade class went on a bus tour of Smithfield and we went to the Grange. Since we went there, I would like to tell you about it. The Fairview Grange, #342 was started about 1898. The first master was John E. Downs. The 35 charter members started meeting in the Old Town House, next to the Village School. Then they built a hall between the road to Sun Set Camps and the stream . The people called it the farm because it was a place for farmers to gather. The first Grange burnt in 1913 and was rebuilt in 1915. Another fire destroyed it in 1986 but they soon rebuilt it. Now one of the members is my grandmother, Norma Bulmer, and she helps take care of it.

The building is not only used for Grange meetings. It is also used as a place for people to vote on town business and other important matters like school budgets and the next president. They have suppers, parties and weddings. My mom and dad got married at the Grange and I was the flower girl. I liked learning the history of the Grange especially because my family does a lot of things there. Our tour guide was Mr. Hartford. He was so nice. He set up tables and let us eat our lunch there. He is a member of the Grange so he was able to tell us all about it.
