THE MERCER MUSEUM

Mercer is a small town but it has its own museum. This museum has a lot of fun stuff to see that tells stories about people who lived and worked in Mercer. Organized by the Mercer Historical Society, the museum is located on top of the Shaw Library on Main Street. If you want to go up in to the Museum you have to go in the back and climb up lots of stairs above the Town Office.

When you get in the Museum you will see a glass box with a lot of things like old books , glasses, and a gun. Look ahead and you will see different kinds of saws and chain saws. We saw an umbrella, a very old typewriter, a spinning wheel, a potato cutter, and some jewelry. We also saw part of a post office, a cream holder, hair curler, an old sled, leather hole puncher, and an old rotted piece of wood. Mr. Fenton, our tour guide, has lived in Mercer a long time and has his own apple orchard called Sandy River Orchards. He is very interested in the history of Mercer. He told us stories about the olden days. Life is easy now because we don't have to work with horses and wagons, or use handsaws to get ice for refridgerators. We have cars, trucks, computers, and other motors to make things easier. By the way, do you know what a kniddy knoddy is? Visit Mercer's Museum and you will find out like we did!
