THE SMITHFIELD BAPTIST CHURCH

Our tour guide for the Smithfield Baptist Church was Mrs.French. She told us that people started meeting in houses back in the 1800s. The church's first minister was Elmer E. Longley. The church was dedicated in 1897. Construction for the church started on June 24,1895 and took two to three years. It cost $2904 to build the church. There were 19 church members and 40 Sunday school people at that time. The first annual budget was $947. Mrs. Hatch raised money from Caribou to Kittery Point for the church.

There was a bell in the belfry of the church but it was replaced because it got cracked. Some boys rang it too hard when they heard that WWII had ended. It was replaced in 1992 when they found one just like the cracked bell. The members needed a crane to get the old one down and the other one up. The church is near the Smithfield Village Store. They have church services and Sunday School for children and adults. Rev. Brewster is the pastor now. If you live in Smithfield please try to stop by.
