Village School |

The Smithfield Village School is very old. It is a green building on North Pond on Route 137 Mrs.Marilyn Giroux went to the Smithfield Village School when she was a child. She now lives across from the school on Rt. 137 and even owned the school building at one time. Mrs.Giroux told us what they did back then. It had no electricity so it was heated by a big stove. On really cold days the students could sit closer to the stove on big chunks of wood. There were grades sub primary through eighth grade all in one room. The students had to walk to school every day. You got to pick the high school you wanted to attend. They played games at recess. In the winter time kids could slide down the hill, across the road and then out onto the pond. Some other people own it now and they are making it into a house. We learned that this building was one of seven school districts in Smithfield back in the 1850s. Mrs. Giroux was a great tour guide and we enjoyed her stories about the Village Schoolhouse. |
