THIRD GRADE DESERT ANIMAL REPORTS

The Gila Monster by Maria & Derek

The Mule Deer by Brittany & Bree

THE GILA MONSTER

What does the Gila Monster look like? It is no more than two feet long. It has small scales on its back. Their colors are pink and black. The Gila Monster eats insects and animals like birds, beetles, and lizard eggs. We would not eat that! It is also nocturnal. Gila Monsters live in hot climates. They live in Utah, California, Arizona, and Mexico. The Gila Monster's tail helps it get through the dry season by storing food in its tail.. It smacks his prey with his tail and then the Gila Monster's sharp teeth kills its prey by injecting its poison. It is slow and shy. The Gila Monster lays three to five eggs.

THE MULE DEER

This is what a mule deer looks like. They are tannish and brownish. They have a white stomach and a tan and white face. The mule deer eats different kinds of food throughout the year. In the early year they eat leaves, buds, mistletoe, ferns, and blackberry and raspberry vines. The mule deer eats grapes, twigs, and grass. They also eat fresh mushrooms. We never knew that they ate that much food throughout the year. Mule deer are usually found near the northwestern Pacific coast. We would have guessed that they lived in more places than this. This is what mule deer do to sirvive. The mule deer can see from a great distance so they can run away from their enemies. Mule deer don't have a lot of enemies. Hunters hunt mule deer and sell them for $4500.00. The mule deer's other enemies are bigger animals. We are glad that they don't have a lot of enemies.
