THE THIRD GRADE STUDY OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT
Written by Jaycee Cushman and Megan Hooper
We started our study of Local Government near the end of February. In that time, we studied about the town of Mercer's Local Government. First we had some town officials come in: such as Jerry (Norman) Redlevske, Town Clerk, Tax Collector and Treasurer, Cheryl McAfee , Smithfield Moderator, Tim Downing, and the Smithfield Town Clerk, Linda French.
The Mercer Town Officials asked the third graders of Mercer School to illustrate the front cover of the Mercer Town Report (It was a winter scene).
Mrs. McAfee helped our class register to vote for the mock election. Then Mrs. French taught us how to mark the ballot. The third grade teacher, Mrs. Winship, assigned different jobs to each student. A lot of them were clerks. There was a registrar of voters, too. Then some people set up the booths. After that the poles were open and students voted. When the mock election ended, the clerks counted the votes and reported.
On March 4th, three third graders attended Mercer's Town Meeting: Megan, Emma D., and Eben.
This was a great unit! Everyone had fun learning about local government!
