US government is the last course in the social studies cluster which is required for graduation and carries one social studies credit. The course examines the structure of the US government with particular attention paid to the three branches of government, the Bill of Rights, and a study of the United Nations. Often, other units are examined which correspond to the real world, such as election procedures or immigration issues. There is a great deal of reading required for this course as well as a demanding amount of assignments.

This course covers the basic American political system and foreign affairs. Contemporary issues and the use of periodicals are used to enhance citizenship responsibilities and view world issues.

American Government - (1 Credit):

This course is an independent study course which fulfills the requirement for a Government credit. There are 12 units which cover America’s beginnings, The Bill of Rights, the branches of U.S. Government, State and Local Governments and the Election Process. This is an upper level course. Requirements: completion of U.S. History or Women in American History.

Criminal Justice - (Elective – 1 Credit):

Consisting of 18 comprehensive lessons. This independent study course examines various areas of the criminal justice system. Some of these are: the juvenile justice system; the courses and kinds of crime; the role of police; the court system; trials; prisons; and probation. As in Civil Justice, the course requires interviewing local professionals as well as text reading and comprehensive questions.

Civil Justice Facilitated Studies 1 credit elective

This course covers consumer law, contract law, housing family law, as well as, damages, injuries and insults.
