Independent Study US History
Instructor: Rean McGinley -Email
United States history is a requirement for graduation.Theindependent study course is designed for students who cannot fit the taught history class into their schedules. It requires that students attend at least two periods per week. The course is a holdover brainchild from the school’s founder, Marti Stevens. In that respect, much of the perspective of the course is a feminist one. Using mostly primary sources, the requirements are to complete nine units, each of which has 5 lessons. A student can finish this course at his/her own pace. No grade is given until the entire course is completed.

However, concepts are selected and focused to help special-needs students learn and retain a basic knowledge of the history of the United States.

World Geography
Instructor: Rean McGinley - Email
World geography is a one credit course required for graduation. It covers both physical geography and cultural geography. Usually, each year, the focus is on a particular place in the world. By studying that place in detail, students learn about the physical characteristics and the human element as well. Much of the work is done in class, but there is an occasional homework assignment. Activities include weekly analysis of environmental issues of the planet using newspaper articles, projects, map studies, creating cultural artifacts, and analyzing statistical data using a variety of different resources such as atlases and almanacs. Sometimes novels are read to study a particular place in the world. The teacher expects the students to participate and stay engaged at all times during classes.
