of Linear Equations

Systems of Linear Equations can be used to compare cost functions and models.

There are two car rental companies, Benner Rentals and Lindsay’s Travel. Benner Rentals charges \$50.00, plus \$0.10 per mile. Lindsay’s Travel charges \$20.00, plus \$0.25 per mile.

An example of this would be an investigation into finding the cheapest car rental agency for a vacation.

If you were taking a trip that covered 50 miles, which company would be more economical to use?

 Benner Rentals: y=.10x + 50 (.10 x 50) + 50 = 55 \$55.00 Lindsay's Travel: y = .25x + 20 (.25 x 50) + 20 = 32.5 \$32.50

At what mileage would the two companies cost the same amount? (use the table or graph)

When the mileage (distance traveled) is 200 miles, both companies would charge the amount of \$70.00 total.

Using this information and your expected mileage, you could determine which agency to use.
