In the course of thirty-four he has had a lot of great students, both in the classroom and on the sports field.
Mr. Walker first learned German at South Portland High School under Miss Gloria Adler. Through her talks about the Black Forest, he had a desire to travel to Germany. He studied German at UMO under Professors Small, Zollitsch, Roggenbauer, Delphendahl, and Betz. While at UMO he took part in immersion programs and studied in Graz, Austria in the summer of 1974.
In 1976 Mr. Walker came to Skowhegan. He studied at Freiburg, Germany in the summer of 1981 and has continued to take part in numerous immersion programs in Bar Harbor and to attend numerous local and national conferences. In 2003 he received a scholarship from the Goethe Institute to study in Berlin, Germany with teachers from throughout the world. He was chosen in 2003 as Maine’s Outstanding Educator by the AATG-Maine. He has also presented TPRS workshops with his foreign language colleagues at the FLAME Conference in Portland, Maine.
Mr. Walker coached football, JV Baseball, and track. He stopped coaching at the high school level once his children were born. He coached Little League Baseball, Babe Ruth Baseball, as well as basketball travel teams for several years. For over twenty-two years he has announced at the home football games.
Mr. Walker’s wife, Jean, is a special education teacher for MSAD 54 in Cornville. His son, Sean, graduated in 2001 from SAHS, in 2005 from Bowdoin College and currently lives in Brooklyn, New York and works for Media.com in Manhattan.. His other son, Jared, graduated in 2004, from UMF with a Community Helth degree, and is currently studying nursing at the University of Maine at Ft. Kent. |
