Transport

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

People living in cities and towns often need to get from place to place quickly and efficiently in order to carry out the activities in their lives. For example a person will at some point in time need to get to a grocery store to buy food. Or go to a clothing store to buy clothes. In order to get from place to place people need some form of transportation either a car, bus, train, or plane.

People do not need to move from place to place inside of a cell, however, cells do need to move materials around inside of them. Maybe a cell needs to move a protein from a ribosome to the other side of the cell so it can be used to repair another organelle. Maybe the cell needs to get a sugar molecule from one part of the cell to mitochondria in a different part of the cell. Or maybe a cell will even need to move a material into or out of the cell itself.

Depending on the material to be moved, how rapidly it needs to be moved, or whether the cell wishes to use energy to move the material or not movement can be accomplished using one of the organelles or processes pictured below.
