Factories and parcel service

In a town or a city there are places that products are made for the people who live in that city. For example; restaurants make food, shoe shops make shoes, and paper mills make paper. In addition to this there must be a way for materials to be shipped from one place in the city to another or even from one city to another.

There is a similar need in a living cell. Cells need many type of materials to be made. For example; proteins, enzymes, and food must be manufactured every day. Also some cells make substances called hormones, or other chemicals that are needed in various parts of the body. The cells must be able to ship these materials out of the cell.

There are several special organelles that help the cell to manufacture and transport materials. The Nucleolus, the Golgi apparatus, and the ribosomes are three such structures.

Click on the organelles in the image below to learn more about these special structures.
