Problem #4

A woman living on a farm in a rural town 2 hours north of Portland is awakened by the sound of her 1-month old baby in the middle of the night. The mother, exhausted from taking care of the baby all day, nudges her husband and asks him to attend to the little one. He picks up the baby and proceeds to mix some infant milk formula which consists of combining tap water with the formula mix. A short time after the baby drinks the bottle, she becomes violently ill. She is rushed to the hospital and the doctor finds that she is experiencing extreme gastrointestinal distress. The doctor comments that an older baby from the same road was brought in a few days earlier with similar symptoms and was found to have kidney damage. The state decides to hire you to find out what is causing these health problems.
