Environmental Chemistry
Project Outline

Phase I---Literature Research

Based on the clues given in each student's scenario, they conducted a search of recent literature. (post 1980)

  • library
  • internet
  • resource people

Phase II---Lab Testing

Students narrowed their research to confirm the contaminant and its concentration.

  • first get positive result for contaminant (qualitative)
  • determine its concentration (quantitative)
  • decide if contaminate is a health hazard at this level

Phase III---Isolating the Contaminate

Determine the source of contaminate.

  • history of area
  • maps of surroundings
  • newspaper articles

Phase IV---Corrective Action

Work as environmental chemists to correct the problem and prevent further contamination.

  • scientifically sound
  • economically feasible

Phase V---Research Paper

Organize findings into a typed paper that will include

  • description of the project
  • discussion of the division of labor in their groups
  • lab work that was necessary
  • description of steps taken to solve the problem
  • complete bibliography

Phase VI---Oral Presentation

Share findings with class and mentors.

  • each member should have a role
  • approximately 15 minutes
  • style and format is up to the student
  • grading done by a group of adults using the grading rubrics
