Dilutions

Some samples need to be diluted. When you are testing and you get over range you need to dilute. Keep this in factors of 10, 100, or 1000.

If you want to dilute by:

10-- add 1 ml of sample and bring volume up to 10 using deionized water.

You could use--->

  • 1 mL of sample/10 mL of solution
  • 10 mL of solution/100 mL of solution

100 --add 1 ml of sample and bring volume up to 100 using deionized water.

You could use--->

  • 1 mL of sample/100 mL of solution
  • 5 mL of sample/500 mL of solution

1000 --add 1 ml of sample and bring volume up to 1000 using deionized water.

You could use--->

  • 1 / 100 dilution and use the same steps that you would to dilute by ten.

Factor-Label Problems

Factor label Problems:
1.) Convert 1 µg/l to 1 mg/l

2.) Convert 43 µg/33ml to ppm

3.) Convert 9.7 ppm to mg/L

4.) Convert 56 mg/l to µg/l

5.) Convert 3 ppb to µg/l

6.) Convert 2.3 mg/l to ppm
