Evolution Expectations

By the end of the chapter you should have the following completed:

1.All sections of the reading should be read with the goal of being able to discuss/explain the information contained in them. You can access the reading for this unit by clicking on the Unit Reading link to the left.
2. The following vocabulary should be defined giving its importance as related to evolution. Give examples where appropriate.

Group A: Adaptations, natural selection, mutations, species, evolution
Group B: Charles Darwin, Jean Baptiste Lamark, Fossil, Extinct, Vestigial Structure, Analogous Structure

3.Have the following review questions completely answered:

Group 1 Change in Living Things

  1. Define adaptation and give an example.
  2. How does color of mouse affect its survival?
  3. What is a species?
  4. What is Evolution by Natural selection?
  5. Give an example of natural selection occurring. You need to include one species with 2 different variations; both living in the same environment, well adapted survives and reproduces, poorly adapted dies.
  6. Why do the genes of well adapted organisms change the direction of evolution?

Group 2 Explanations for Evolution

  1. Who was the Evolution Dude?
  2. How did Larmark say evolution occurred? Give an example that shows why Larmark’s theory is incorrect.
  3. What are Darwin’s 4 most important ideas?
  4. What kind of evidence for evolution comes from sedimentary rocks?
  5. A salamander, a chicken, a chimp and a human all have look similar in early embryonic stages. How does this give evidence in support of evolution?
  6. What is a vestigal structure and how are they evidence of evolution?

4.Labs to be handed in with discussion questions written out and answered in complete sentences:

5. Record the material covered in class notes and commit it to memory.

Extra credit (up to 3 pts)

To be eligible for extra credit, all homework must be completed on time for the unit. Extra credit is due the day of the test.

Write a short biography of Charles Darwin. Include major events in his personal life as well as his scientific career. Please type your paper using 12 pt. font, black ink and having 1-inch margins maximum on your paper.
