The Genetic Unit Expectations

By the end of the chapter you should have the following completed:

1. Have the following words written down and defined in your notebook.

Part 1 Inheritance of Traits: chromosome, dominant, recessive, homozygous dominant, true breeding dominant, true breeding recessive, heterozygous, genotype, probability, phenotype, genotype, Gregor Mendel

Part 2 Human Genetics : Amniocentesis, X chromosome, Y chromosome, Autosome,

Part 3 Weird Types of Inheritance : Incomplete dominance, Sickle cell anemia, Codominance, x-linked genes, Turners syndrome, Klinefelters syndrome, Down syndrome, hemophilia, dyslexia, PKU, cystic fibrosis

Part 4 DNA – Life’s Code: DNA, nitrogen bases, gene, adenine, thymine, guanine, cytosine, uracil, replication, transcription, mRNA, rRNA, tRNA, mutation, radiation, deletion, insertion, inversion,

2. All sections of the reading should be read with the goal of being able to discuss/explain the information contained in them.
3. Have the following review questions completely answered in your notebook:

Group 1-Inheritance of Traits

1.How are chromosomes in sex cells different from those in body cells?
2.How many different kinds of offspring could result if one parent is homozygous dominant and the other parent homozygous recessive?
3. How many different kinds of offspring could result if both parents are heterozygous?
4.Draw a Punnett square to show what genes a child would be expected to have if each parent were heterozygous for long eyelashes. Use L to stand for the dominant traits (Long eyelashes) and l to represent the recessive trait (short eyelashes).
5.What is Gregor Mendel’s claim to fame?

Group 2 Human Genetics

  1. What is amniocentesis?
  2. What would happen if each sex cell had the same number of chromosomes as a body cell?

Group 3. Weird types of inheritance

  1. What is incomplete dominance?
  2. What is codominance?
  3. A woman has type A blood and her husband has type B blood. She gives birth to a child who has type O blood. Can her husband be the father of the baby?
  4. What is x- linked mean regarding genes?
  5. Name three genetic disorders and tell how each is controlled by genes.
  6. What is Trisomy 21 better known as?

Group 4 DNA

1. Why is DNA important to life?
2. What are the four nitrogen bases found in DNA?
3.What are the jobs of mRNA, rRNA, and tRNA?
4.What is a mutation?
5.A piece of one side of a DNA strand has the base order of CCGAAT.

A.What is the order of the bases opposite these?
B. What is the order of the mRNA bases that would come from the strand CCGAAT?
C.What are the two amino acids that the piece of DNA, CCGAAT codes for?

6. Name three different types of mutations.

4. Labs to be handed in with discussion questions written out and answered in complete sentences:

Penny Lab Bean Lab (Punnett Squares)
Genetic Scavenger hunt DNA origami lab
Face Lab

5. Know how to convert from one unit to another in the metric system using a leapfrog
6. Know all material covered in class notes.

Extra credit: Since the genetics unit if very large, it will be assessed by two tests. You have been given two extra credit assignments. Only one assignment may be used on each test. Only students who have completed all of their homework for the unit will be allowed to do the extra credit. Extra credit is due the day you take the test you want it to count for.

Activity 1: Do the online review test for the first genetics test and submit it to me for credit. If you get an 80 or better on the test, you will get 2 points on your first genetics test. To access the review test, follow the link below:

http://www.msad54.org/sahs/science/team1/Bio2/WebTests/gene1rev.htm

After submitting the test, if you will be told your score and the correct answers for the ones you got wrong.

Assignment 2: (maximum 2 pts on test)

Activity 1: Do the online review test for the second genetics test and submit it to me for credit. If you get an 80 or better on the test, you will get 2 points on your second genetics test. To access the review test, follow the link below:

http://www.msad54.org/sahs/science/team1/Bio2/WebTests/gene3rev.htm

After submitting the test, if you will be told your score and the correct answers for the ones you got wrong.
