Chapter 19 Protist Expectations

By the end of the chapter you should have the following completed:

1. Be able to define and give an example when appropriate of:

Group A: protozoa, algae, slime mold, pseudopodia, Sarcodines (phylum Rhizopoda), flagellates (phylum Zoomastigina), ciliates (phylum Ciliophora), oral grove, paramecium, micronucleus, macronucleus, sporozoans (phylum Sporozoa), spore,

Group B: , euglenoids, diatoms, dinoflagellates, Red algae, green algae, Brown algae, stipe, holdfast, blade, air bladder, thallus, colony, golden algae

Group C: plasmodial slime mold, cellular slime mold, downy mildew

2. All sections of the reading should be read with the goal of being able to discuss/explain the information contained in them. You can access the readings for this unit online by clicking on the Unit Readings button to the left.
3. Have the following concept review questions completely answered:

Group 1- The World of Protists

  1. Describe how a sarcodines moves and obtains it food.
  2. How do sporozoans differ from other protozoa?
  3. Explain the differences that exist between ciliates and flagellates.
  4. If you placed a paramecium in salt water, what role would its contractile vacuole play and why?
  5. Outline the life cycle of the sporozoan that causes malaria in humans, Plasmodium.

Group 2 – Algae: Plantlike protists

  1. Which algae group can live in deeper water than any other? Explain how this is possible.
  2. Name all the groups within the algae subkingdom.
  3. What adaptations has a euglena evolved in the way of getting its energy?
  4. Outline the diatom life cycle.
  5. In what ways are algae important to all living things on earth?

Group 3- slime molds, water molds, and downy mildews

1. Describe the protozoan and fungus like characteristics of slime molds.
2. How does a plasmodial slime mold differ from a cellular slime mold?
3. The Blob was a movie about an alien organism that lands on earth and consumes all living things in its path. Which type of protist from this chapter doe the Blob resemble and in what ways?

4.      Labs to be handed in with discussion questions written out and answered in complete sentences:

Prepared protist slide lab Live protist lab

5.      Record all material presented in class notes and commit them to memory.

Extra Credit: To be passed in and presented before the test is taken (maximum 2 pts on test)

Start reading the labels of the foods you eat. Make a list of those foods that include algae or algal products. Look for carrragenan or algin, two products commonly used.
