One of Twelve Partner Schools in Maine

Last spring, I was fortunate enough to be chosen as a partner teacher with the Maine Lakes Conservancy Institute. As a result, Skowhegan Area Middle School was awarded the opportunity to be a partner school in this program. There are twelve partner schools throughout the state. Three new schools are chosen each year. The schools are selected based on their commitment to “lake stewardship in the internet age”.

This Year Focus will be Oral History.....

A representative from MLCI will visit the class this winter in preparation for this years focus which is an oral history of the lake. Students will interview lake experts to learn more about this natural resource in their community. In the spring, students will go aboard a 30 foot pontoon boat equipped with scientific equipment in order to explore lake ecology. The data collected from the study will be posted on the student portal of the MLCI web site

Five Years and Twenty Five Students....

My students will be a part of the program for five years. The group participating will consist of approximately 25 eighth grade students that are willing to make the commitment of taking this additional science class. Over the course of the partnership with MLCI, students on the Elm team will submit information under various categories of study regarding the lake. The categories are listed on the MLCI web site.

I am very excited to be involved with this program. The students are getting a wonderful opportunity to be a part of a content rich, exciting, meaningful, hands on experience. My hope is that this experience will lead to a greater appreciation of our natural resources and lake stewardship as well as a strengthened interest in science.
