Every
year the local Skowhegan Lions Club sponsors a “Peace Poster”
contest. This contest allows local children to enter art work denoting the
year’s theme, and to qualify world wide among three million children
in a shared vision of world peace. The contest provides an outlet for children
and adults to discuss the meaning of world peace while artistically demonstrating
ideas for reaching this goal. Our theme this year was “Celebrate Peace .”
Several artists were selected and awarded cash prizes for their efforts to
create world peace.
This year eighteen seventh grade art students
from the Skowhegan Area Middle School participated with direction from art
teacher Kathleen Perelka . The Skowhegan Lions
club held an ”Opening Night” and Art Show that displayed all of
the posters at the Free Skowhegan Library. The winners were chosen by local
artists in the community and our Lions Club Peace Poster Committee. The winner
of our 2007 local club contest and the Lions district contest was Ashley
Lawler. Also recognized were
Mindy Allen and Mikayla Fitzmaurice.
All of the participating students received
local movie passes and honorable mention certificates. The qualifying winners
received cash awards. The opportunity to win an international artistic competition
is available to all students that participate. There are awards and recognition
all along the way. Skowhegan Lions Club Peace Poster committee Chairman Elizabeth
Doucette stated that she hopes “ the program will spread further every
year because every child deserves a chance - whose vision of peace is strong
enough to be seen and heard around the world”.For
