Jigsaw is a classroom structure that can be used in any content area.  All students are in cooperative groups called Home groups. The teacher divides reading material into portions and one portion is given to each group. In this case, each group will be responsible for their portion of the PBS article/ interview.

The Home group members choose a reader and all take notes on the information in their section. They discuss the main ideas with each other so that they fully understand the material. Students can make a section in their Noteshare Notebook for the current event article and keep notes there. They can option drag the article into the notebook or embed the website.

After each Home group has completed the reading and processed the information, students are then sent to new groups called Jigsaw groups. Each person takes his/her notes from their Home group, and their task is now to convey the material to the Jigsaw group

Each member of the new Jigsaw group takes a turn sharing the notes on the information they have mastered. The others listen and take notes so that they too, can understand the material. This strategy lends itself to deeper understanding of content while it actively involves students in the reading process. Interpersonal communication skills are also enhanced.

When each member has taken notes on all the sections of the article, it is time to process as a whole class.

Provide the students with a graphic organizer or a current event form where you emphasize the who, what, when, where and how of the article, and color coding the reading sections may help in adjusting the readings for different levels. Heterogeneous grouping is best because of the mixture of social skills and academic strengths. All students have different learning styles and in mixed groups they are able to learn from the strengths of one another.

Use the Current event form posted with this lesson. If you want to embed in Noteshare so they can type on the form, use the .doc version of the Jigsaw Strategy.
