South America Web Page Project :
by Carrie Luce Social Studies Teacher

Description:
Your mission is to research one of the South American countries we have studied in class. Your research will then serve as the basis for the web page you will construct. You will be working with the laptop program “Dreamweaver” to accomplish this task. You may work individually or with a partner of your own choosing.

Process:
South American countries will be randomly assigned to individuals or pairs of students (we’ll draw names from a hat). Once you’ve drawn your country, you will begin the research process. Your research should focus on the following topics:
1. Basic information about the country (location, ethnic make-up,
economy, official language, and type of government)
2. Geography of the country (major landforms and bodies of water)
3. Incorporating the vocabulary from the unit
4. FREE CHOICE - Choosing at least 2 of the following topics as they
pertain to your country to research in depth: culture (this could be music,
art/ architecture, food, politics, religion), history, current events, sports/ recreation, or
maybe you’re interested in another topic, just let me know

Please be sure to keep track of the sources you use as you will cite them in your project. I expect you to use your textbook to acquire the basic information about your country. After that, you may use Worldbook, the Internet, and library resources to gather your research.

You will be using Dreamweaver to construct your web page. While this program is very user-friendly, there are many steps involved. In order for each of you to create a quality web page, Mrs. Richter will spend a couple of class periods teaching us about Dreamweaver. Only after you have conferenced with me and we’ve checked your research will you begin work on the technology piece, this includes gathering pictures and other graphics for the web page.

Do your best to select topics that interest you; your curiosity of the topic will impact the final outcome (web page) of the project.

Outcome:
The final product will be your web page. This part of the project is a lot of fun - there is plenty of room for creativity as you are designing the web page. When you are ready to begin working with the Dreamweaver program, you will be given a criteria sheet which will detail the components that your web page should include. You will also be given a rubric, which will show you how each component of the web page is weighted. Web pages that exhibit creativity, thoughtfulness, and meet or exceed the criteria will be posted on the Maple Social Studies web site.
