Ice Fishing and Skating in Maine

Skiing and ice fishing are two winter activities many people in Maine participate in. In our presentation we are going to tell about skiing, ice fishing, winter weather, and ice outs.
The average Maine winter temperature is between 20 and 30 degrees. Maine receives around 8.75 feet of snow a year.
There are two different kinds of skiing. Alpine skiing is downhill, and nordic is cross country. Cross country skiing is on flat land.
When skiing there is certain equipment and things you need. Your skis are an important factor needed when skiing. As a beginner skier, it's always a good idea to rent skis until you get more confident on the slopes. Renting skis will allow you to get a better idea of what skis are best for you, and as you improve, you will be able to predict how much time you want to spend on the slopes, and how much money you want to spend on your skis.
When skiing you need ski boots. It’s a good idea to rent boots first, but after you feel more comfortable skiing it would be easier to buy your own. Bindings are also needed. Bindings attach your boots to your skis. Bindings are set for the skier’s height and weight. It is important that your bindings be set by a someone who knows what they’re doing, because your bindings release you from your skis when you fall. If they are set incorrectly you could seriously get hurt.
Ski poles are an important part of your equipment. They help you keep your balance, and they are extremely useful in helping when turning. Ski poles need to be light enough so that your arms don’t get tired, but they need to be strong enough to last through ski season. When skiing, don’t forget to dress warm with hats, mittens or gloves, and winter jackets.
The equipment is very similar for both alpine and nordic skiing. When skiing downhill your heel is firmly attached to your ski, but when skiing cross country your heel is free.
Ski season usually last from late November to March, and costs anywhere between $200 and $450 for a season pass and to ski for one day it cost around $30 to $50. Sugarloaf is the largest ski mountain in Maine. There are about eighteen or more large ski mountains in Maine.
Ice fishing is also a popular winter activity in Maine. Ice fishing is similar to regular fishing. Regular fishing usually takes place on a boat, but ice fishing takes place on lakes that have frozen over with ice. When ice fishing the ice has to be six inches thick on top of the lake for a group of people to be on it and two inches thick for a single person to be on it. The lakes in Maine are all between 200 to 316 feet deep.
The ice fishing season is usually from January 1 to March 31. Many different kinds of fish are caught. Some fish that are caught are landlocked salmon, brook trout, lake trout, brown trout, splake, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, white perch, and pickerel.
