| Croteau Apiary is a one acre organic bee farm located on 51
Union Avenue Skowhegan, Maine.
David Croteau started the farm
on
his own
with the help
of some friends. His bees make a lot of honey and winter
on their own honey and are fed sugar only in emergencies. David
Croteau got involved with bees about six years ago, because
David had severe arthritis and getting stung actually helps.
A friend told him about the bee-keeping idea, and also told
him about the Warre hives method. He got interested and decided
to become a beekeeper.
David uses Warre hives because they
are cheap and easy to produce, and the equipment required
is
minimal. He became a farmer in 2003 with five hives and
by 2006 had covered his start-up costs for twenty hives and
all the equipment. David also raises chickens and sells fresh
eggs.
He welcomes visitors anytime. He sells at the farmers’
market
and the farm as well.
