Essential Questions:
Where does my food come
from and why should I care?
How can I get involved with my local Farmers to learn more about the food we
eat?
Overview:
In the Skowhegan community there are a growing number of small farms that are
establishing a local foods market. There is a seasonal farmer’s market
in town and starting this year, a winter market has been created for farmers
to continue to make their products available. Unfortunately, many residents are
not aware that the market exists, and still many more do not understand the benefits
to their health and the economy when purchasing local foods.
Goals and Objectives:
The first goal of this project is to first raise student awareness and understanding
of the health and economic benefits of buying food from a local source. Once
the students gain an understanding of the concept they will be invited to create
a web page to inform Skowhegan area residents of the products available and the
economic impact of supporting their local farms.Student

Students took an active role in making the pizza dough and preparing all pizza ingredients. To make the dough they worked in groups of 3. One person was responsible for measuring the ingredients, another to hand mix the dough, and someone to knead the dough. Most students had the opportunity to practice their kneading skills that were taught to them by Amber Lambke, a Farmer’s Market volunteer. The students were really focused and motivated to learn the “art” of making and kneading pizza dough.
The pizza topping ingredients, which were donated by local farmer’s, were also prepared by the students. They learned to snip rosemary and dried hot chili peppers with scissors. They chopped onions, green onions, spinach, fiddleheads, and leeks and they also learned to peel and mince garlic |
