Who
Was Benedict Arnold?
Benedict Arnold was an
American Revolutionary general. He was America's most
infamous traitor. As a child, around the age of 14, Benedict
Arnold ran away from home twice, to serve in the colonial
militia during the French and Indian War (1754-1763). When
the revolution war broke out, Arnold marched his Conneticut
troops to Massachusetts, there Arnold was granted
colonel.
Benedict Arnold was born
January 14, 1741 in Norwich Connecticut. At a young age,
Arnold was drawn from school, because of some financial
problems gone wrong. Arnold's mother was a wealthy widow,
until some bad business happened. They learned to manage. He
was often in trouble, and soon his wealthy cousins took him
in. They had their own large, successful business. His
mother died in 1767 and two years later, her husband died.
Arnold would travel to Europe to buy supplies for his own
apothecary, which he held in New Haven. His sister, Hannah,
was soon to become his assistant. She was the only immediate
family he had left. But soon, his business turned into
smuggling. Benedict Arnold married Margaret Mansfield, in
1767, they had three children.
