This is Edwin Ross Calder. He is an artist living in our town. Ed has talked to us about many interesting things that he has done in his lifetime. He is now 83 years old and lived throughout the Great Depression.

During the Great Depression at age 16, Ed worked for the C.C.C. spraying gypsy moths and this job was a welcomed relief from the hard times. He was a young man at the time. His mother came right over from Scotland and she made sure all her brothers and sisters came over also. Art is something that runs in Ed's family.

Ed's family home was in Durham Maine on the road to Freeport. He has fond memories of growing up there as an only child. He also lived as a very young child in the town of Lisbon Falls.

Ed played minor league baseball in Maine and even played against the Negro Leagues that traveled to this state. He told us interesting stories aboout these games. He was called up to the major league but never went because he joined the Navy and served in the South Pacific.

When Ed got out of the navy, he married Frances Rowell and they had seven children in all. When they lived in Durham, Richard, the first boy was born. Later, they moved to Norridgewock and at last Skowhegan. Ed sold vacuum cleaners in the 1950's and 1960's. He was considered one of the most handsome salesmen and he got the award for selling the most cleaners too.

There will soon be a documentary about the Negro Leagues on this website and it will include the interview with Mr. Calder so stay tuned.....
