The suitcase with the cranes needed to get to San Diego. This is where the Spirit of St. Louis was built.

Capt. Mike Knollmann of the USS Decatur had been a Crate Day guest so we asked for his help. After

the Decatur was built in Maine it would be stationed in San Diego. He was glad to be part of the team.

Capt. Knollmann is a great guy. Kids from Canaan two years ago, (now the kids are on our Cedar Team) first met him when we went to see his ship launched at Bath, Maine.

If you would like to learn more about how these ships are built check out the BIW page. The launching

is done the "old fashioned way" where the ship slides down a ramp into the water.

It is so much fun, Mr Ross decided to have his own launch in his backyard at

crate day. Mr. Ross met Capt. Knollmann's father and told him how nice he had been to the kids from

Canaan since we met him at the launch. His dad asked if he ever told the kids the story about how he

went to a launch when he was a kid. His father said Capt. Knollmann watched the ship slide in to the

water and turned to his father and said "When I grow up I am going to drive one of those!" Dreams do

come true when you work at them.
